In December, we had the pleasure of hosting Julio Menna as our Artist’s Residence. His work truly enriched our painting collection and he shared his unique artistic vision. Here’s a brief glimpse into his inspiring experience with us, highlighting the creative journey behind his project.

Who is Julio Menna and how did he end up in Palermo?
Julio Menna was born in Argentina, surrounded by a rich blend of cultures and breathtaking landscapes—a constant reminder of the beauty in diversity. His desire to explore and seek inspiration beyond the homeland led him to Palermo, a city that instantly captured his heart.

What is it about Palermo that inspires the most?
Palermo is a living mosaic. The architecture tells stories of centuries gone by, while the nature surrounding the city adds an incredible energy. Murales, it is deeply rooted in the element of nature and architecture. He loves playing with the shapes and colors in Palermo – like the doms of the churches, the archs of the old buildings, or the greens of parks. He tries to merge those influences into fluid, dream like compositions that reflect the city’s spirit. The work he made here at A Casa di Amici is the result of small collages with paper scraps, creating pop landscapes in which flowers and stars of color coexist with local architecture.

How does A Casa di Amici connect to Julio’s artistic journey?
A Casa di Amici reflecs all that his artistic side. It is a space that radiates creativity, energy, and a sense of community just like his murals. Every corner of A Casa di Amici feels like a canvas, whether it’s the colorful decor, the music that fills the air, or the people who gather there to share their stories.

Our experience with Julio
From the first moment he entered the hostel, Julio collaborated with all the members of our staff. Together with Claudia, he chose the colors for the canvas and took possession of our creative room, where he could paint peacefully at the hours he preferred. He chatted at length with Timmy and was also able to express himself in Spanish with Roberta. He was involved in the folk dances on Thursdays by Manu, in which he participated with joy and great openness.
