HALLOWEEN IS JUST THE BEGINNING:

DISCOVER THE FESTA DEI MORTI

When you think of Halloween, you probably imagine costumes, pumpkins and spooky decorations. But in Sicily, the end of October and the beginning of November are also a time for a much older tradition: the Festa dei Morti, or Day of the Dead.

According to Sicilian tradition, the souls of deceased loved ones return during the night between 1 and 2 November to bring gifts and sweets to children. The following morning, little ones wake up to discover treats left for them, turning the memory of those who have passed away into a celebration filled with family, stories and affection.

The Festa dei Morti in Sicily is a unique way to discover the island’s cultural heritage, where ancient beliefs, delicious food and local customs come together.

U CANNISTRU: A BASKET FULL OF TRADITION

One of the most recognisable symbols of this celebration is u cannistru, a traditional basket filled with seasonal products and sweet treats. Depending on local customs, it may contain dried fruit, mandarins, pomegranates and traditional Sicilian sweets.

Another much-loved treat is the pupaccena: colourful, handmade sugar figures shaped like characters, animals and legendary heroes. These edible creations are more than just sweets; they are part of a tradition passed down through generations.

TASTE THE FLAVOURS OF PALERMO

The Festa dei Morti is also an opportunity to enjoy the simple, authentic flavours of Palermo. During this period, traditional bread and local ingredients take centre stage.

One speciality worth trying is the muffoletta, a traditional Sicilian bread that can be enjoyed with fresh ricotta. For a savoury version, you can add anchovies or tomato and finish everything with freshly pressed olive oil. Simple ingredients, full of flavour.

THE OPERA DEI PUPI: LEGENDS COME TO LIFE

Tradition is not only about food. The Opera dei Pupi, Sicily’s traditional puppet theatre, brings legendary tales of knights, battles and heroic adventures to life.

Characters such as Orlando and Rinaldo, the famous Paladins of France, have entertained generations of Sicilian children. After visiting the cemetery to honour their departed loved ones, families have traditionally taken their children to enjoy puppet shows, keeping these stories alive through the generations.

THE CAPUCHIN CATACOMBS: A REAL HALLOWEEN THRILL

Looking for something truly mysterious during your visit to Palermo? The Capuchin Catacombs offer an unforgettable experience.

Dating back to 1599, the Catacombs are home to around 2,000 mummified bodies. Some have been preserved for centuries, still wearing the clothes they were buried in. Walking through these corridors offers a fascinating, sometimes unsettling glimpse into Palermo’s history and its relationship with death and remembrance.

Whether you come for the traditional sweets, the legends or the mysterious atmosphere of the Catacombs, the Festa dei Morti reveals a different side of Sicily: a place where memories, family traditions and cultural heritage remain very much alive.
